Disability Access audits
Disability Discrimination Act 1995 (DDA)
"From the 1st of Oct 2004, organisations that provide goods and services to the public were required by the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) to ensure that their premises and services can be accessed by disabled persons."
Who does the Disability Discrimination Act affect?
Everyone who is considered to be a 'Service Provider'.
What duties do service providers have?
Service Providers are required to make reasonable adjustments to physical features within their premises which may impede access to Disabled Persons.
What is a Disability?
The Disability Rights Commission defines disability as
"a physical or mental impairment which has a substantial and long-term adverse effect on a person's ability to carry out normal day-to-day activities"
What are Acess Audits?
Access audits are now identified in the Code of Practice for Part III of the DDA as the best tool for the planned improvement of services and premises.
Access auditing involves an inspection of a building to appraise its accessibility, which is judged against predetermined criteria.
