Changes to Accident Reporting
With the imminent changes (6 April 2012) to the reporting of injuries, disease and dangerous occurrence regulations (RIDDOR) I recently produced an updated accident reporting procedure for one of our new corporate clients. I circulated the procedure for comment and was surprised to receive concerns over people’s competency for reporting accidents to the HSE’s Incident Contact Centre (ICC).
It transpired that most managers who would be required to make the reports had attended IOSH Supervising Safely; this two day course touched on accident reporting but did not go into any detail. I also checked the last two years RIDDOR reports and discovered that two had been reported incorrectly.
To resolve these concerns I agreed to run a short course, approximately 3.5 hours that:
• Outlined RIDDOR amendments and
• Explained how to report accidents correctly to the HSE’s ICC.
The course I created covered the following topics:
• Why incidents and accidents need to be reported
• Current legislation applicable to accidents
• What incidents need to be reported
• What records need to be kept
• What should happen to the records
• How delegates can help their business meet it’s legal responsibilities
• How to report incidents
• Who has responsibilities for ensuring accidents are correctly reported
• How long records are to be kept
• Worked examples and case studies
• Navigating the HSE accident reporting website
• Practical completion of an accident report forms
• Question and Answer session
If you would like your accident reporting procedures updated to reflect changes coming into effect on the 6 April 2012, or would like your managers to attend this course, then speak to Kae or Carol on 01933 626444 or email enquiries@rsaenvironmentalhealth.co.uk
